Westmeath footballers got their 2013 season off on the right note with a comfortable win over Athlone IT in Hogan Park, Moate last Sunday. While the O’Byrne Cup is far from the Holy Grail, it is still a worthwhile competition for blooding new talent and an opportunity for more established players to shed the winter cobwebs.

It is surely a case of nothing to lose and everything to gain as Westmeath welcome Kerry to Cusack Park on Sunday for round two of the all-Ireland qualifiers. Nobody, diehards included, are giving Pat Flanagan’s men a chance and the consensus is that it is only a matter of by how much will the Kingdom reign supreme.

Not again. That is surely the feeling expressed by both sets of players and indeed supporters when Louth and Westmeath were drawn against each other, yet again, for the first round of the qualifiers. This will be the seventh time in the past two years that the sides have met with the score standing 6-0 to the men from the Wee County. Even though Louth have made a habit of coming out on top there has never been very much between the sides.

Westmeath have drawn Louth in the first round of the qualifiers due to take place on Saturday week, June 30.
